The Italian program allows students to learn the language through domains such as visual arts (construction work), mathematics (solving mathematical tasks in the target language), technology, music and drama. Students experience ‘hands on’ cultural aspects of Italian food, to make pasta, tomato sauce by using produce from the school garden and wood oven pizza.
The students showcase their achievements in Italian through performances for the local Italian community, the school concert, Christmas carols and throughout Italian Day.
St Gabriel’s embraces the culture of our Italian community with Italian lessons once a week for all students. The students also have the opportunity to shine in the wider community through the Dante Alighieri Italian multimedia competition and the Dante Alighieri poster competition (creative writing/ artwork) . In 2016 we received 1st and 2nd place for outstanding collaborative, creative multimedia film work and having their achievements published in the in the Italian newspaper ‘IL Globo.’
We have also celebrated and embraced 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for the poster competition. The children attend a ceremony at Melbourne University with family and friends presented by the Dante committee. We celebrated the success of a number students who received High Distinctions, Honourable Mentions and certificates of excellent achievements.
